Campus Safety Report: Oct. 14 - 20

Criminal Mischief

October 15, 2022, 8:44 p.m. (Montag Center): Campus Safety received a report that the door to the bike storage room in Montag would not secure and that they suspected the door might have been tampered with. Campus Safety responded but was unable to secure the door, so Maintenance was contacted to repair the door.


October 17, 2022, 3:56 a.m. (Matthews Parking Lot): Campus Safety received a call that an employee’s car window had been broken. Campus Safety responded and took photos and filed a report. The employee was advised to call Salem PD to file a police report.


Suspicious Activity/Persons

October 16, 2022, 1:15 p.m. (The Quad): A Campus Safety officer encountered an individual yelling near the Quad, stating that they own the university and the police department. The officer asked the individual to leave the property or the police would be called. The individual made their way off campus as they continued to yell.


October 16, 2022, 6:19 p.m. (Sparks Parking Lot): A Campus Safety officer encountered two individuals who were not students behaving inappropriately in the Sparks parking lot. The individuals were escorted off campus.


October 17, 2022, 8:01 a.m. (Goudy Commons): A Campus Safety officer encountered two individuals on motorized scooters checking out a parked golf cart near Goudy. The officer spoke to one of the individuals and explained that they were on private property and need to leave.


October 17, 2022, 2:30 p.m. (Softball Field): An employee called Campus Safety to report that inappropriate drawings and writing had been drawn in the dirt portion of the softball field. A Campus Safety officer responded and raked away the drawings.


October 18, 2022, 11:20 p.m. (Olin Science Center): A Campus Safety officer discovered that a bunsen burner had been left lit inside one of the labs in Olin. The officer turned off the gas to the burner / put out the flame and secured the lab.



Theft

October 14, 2022, 11:42 a.m. (Collins Science): An employee called Campus Safety to report that the fossil case in Collins Science had been broken into and items had been stolen. The stolen items include a shark megalodon tooth, an ammonite, and fossilized cedar. The display case was moved to a more secure location.


October 14, 2022, 1:45 p.m. (McColloch Stadium): A student reported that their truck had been broken into at the Stadium the day prior. The student noted that they had locked the vehicle when they left but found their vehicle unlocked upon their return. They reported that several items had been stolen from the inside of their vehicle.


October 17, 2022, 1:21 p.m. (Matthews Parking Lot): An officer was dispatched to the Matthews parking lot to take a report on a vehicle break-in that occurred. The right rear window of a student’s vehicle had been broken out with an unknown tool. And several items were taken from the inside of the vehicle. Pictures of the vehicle were taken, and the student was advised to call Salem Police to file a report.


October 20, 2022, 8:37 p.m. (Hatfield Library): Campus Safety received a call from a student stating that the Braille signs for the bathrooms in the Hatfield Library had been stolen. A work order was created to replace the missing signs.


Trespass

October 18, 2022, 6:00 p.m. (University Apartments Parking Lot): A Campus Safety officer observed an individual loitering in the University Apartments parking lot and asked them to leave. Campus Safety subsequently received several calls that an individual with a matching description was actively attempting to get into vehicles parked in the parking lot. Dispatch contacted Salem PD to have the individual trespassed. The officer returned to the scene and witnessed the individual attempting to gain entry to a student’s vehicle. The officer told the individual to leave, but the individual refused and laid down on the ground. Salem Police arrived and the individual was arrested for trespassing.


Vehicle Accident / Hit and Run

October 19, 2022, 3:15 p.m. (Mill St.): Campus Safety received a report that a student’s vehicle had been damaged while it was parked on Mill St, across from the WISH building. The person responsible for the damage did not leave a note on the student’s vehicle. Campus Safety responded and took photos and filed a report.
