Fast Winter Break Sports Report

Graphic by Carolyn Vazquez

Hello, Bearcat fan! While you were at home lighting menorahs, putting stars on trees and what have you, the ‘Cats were on campus, like coiled vipers in the underbrush. Before empty stands they swam, ran, dribbled and shot all in service of one the highest powers of all: Willamette University athletics. Let’s go to the news!

In conference play Men’s Basketball went 3-2, falling to Pacific and Puget Sound, but defeating Linfield, Pacific Lutheran and George Fox. Originally projected for ninth in the conference, the Bearcats now sit in playoff contention with a 4-3 record. You’ve got to Lena-HAND it to new head coach Mike Lenahan. … (I’m so sorry. It won’t happen again).

Women’s Basketball took care of business as usual. They now sit second in the conference after taking out Linfield, PLU, UPS and George Fox, but failing to get a result in second overtime against first place Pacific.

Both Swim Teams routed Pacific but suffered an equal and opposite fate the next day up north at Puget Sound.

In the world of sport: The six-team Professional Women’s Hockey League began its inaugural season, the Michigan Wolverines won their 12th college football national championship, and Girona F.C. looks like they could win La Liga.

Consider in the coming weeks: How will Women’s Basketball fare in their upcoming rematch against Whitman at home, and alternatively, when humans are stripped of their neural decorations, of their conditioning, what do they become? Would the heart that beats in that wild vacancy be a beacon, or would it look like an immense and churning darkness?
