Alarm

January 24, 2023, 4:21 a.m. (University Apartments): Campus Safety received a call that the fire alarm was going off at the University Apartments and that the building was being evacuated. The officer also received a call from Salem Fire that they were on the way to the building. Salem Fire arrived on scene and determined that it had been a false alarm by one of the fire panels. Maintenance was notified about the false alarm emanating from the fire panel.


Burglary

January 16, 2023 (Lausanne Hall): Two students called Campus Safety to report that their rooms had been broken into sometime during Winter Break, and items had been stolen from their residences. One student reported that the window to their room had been left unlocked, while another stated that their window does not lock properly. A maintenance request was filed to fix the lock on the student’s window, and reports were filed about the students’ stolen items.


Suspicious Activity

January 16, 2023, 3:02 p.m. (Matthews Hall): A student called Campus Safety to report an individual appeared to be intoxicated outside of Matthews Hall. A Campus Safety officer arrived on scene and found the individual yelling inappropriate language at students and swinging a wine bottle. The officer distanced the individual from students, but the individual refused to leave the property when directed to do so. Salem PD arrived on scene and the individual left the premises.


January 18, 2023, 1:55 a.m. (Belknap Hall): A student reported that a suspicious individual was inside Belknap, swaying in front of the vending machine. A Campus Safety officer arrived on scene and found the individual outside the front entrance to Terra. When approached, the individual became agitated and verbally aggressive. The officer informed the individual that they were on private property, and asked them how they had gotten inside the building. The individual responded by yelling verbally aggressive statements at the officer, but eventually left the premises. The officer reported the incident to Salem PD.


January 18, 2023, 12:31 p.m. (Kaneko Commons): Campus Safety received a call that there was a suspicious individual inside the lobby of Kaneko Commons. A Campus Safety officer arrived on scene and found the individual sitting on the lobby floor. The individual also had a pit bull with them that was not on a leash. The officer attempted to approach the individual but could not get close without the pit bull growling at them. The officer informed the individual that they needed to leave the premises but received no response. Campus Safety dispatch called Salem P.D. and Salem Fire, who arrived on scene and were able to get the individual to leave the property. The director of TIUA was contacted about the doors being unlocked, and it was agreed that going forward the doors would be locked and require swipe access for entry in order to avoid similar situations in the future.


January 19, 2023, 2:49 a.m. (Sparks Center): While on patrol, a Campus Safety officer encountered an individual approaching the main entrance to the Sparks Center and looking inside. The officer informed the individual that they were on private property and needed to leave, to which the individual complied. The officer found that one of the doors to Sparks was unsecured and had been tampered with. The officer completed a patrol of the building and surrounding area and did not find anyone else around. The door was secured and a work order was placed to repair the door. At 3:30 a.m. the officer encountered the same individual sitting behind the Sparks building, and the individual was warned that if they were seen again the police would be called.


January 19, 2023, 10:11 a.m. (University Center): Campus Safety received a call that a suspicious individual had entered the UC and then entered the Bistro. A Campus Safety officer responded to the scene and followed the individual to make sure they left the premises. The individual then entered the Service Center inside the University Services Building and incoherently filled out a parking citation appeal form. The individual was asked to leave and complied with the request.


January 23, 2023, 10:43 a.m. (Oak St. Properties): A Campus Safety officer reported encountering two individuals walking out of the area near a hole in the Oak St. fencing. The officer proceeded to patrol the surrounding area and found an individual living inside a black trailer on the property. The officer asked the individual to leave, to which the individual complied.


January 24, 2023, 3:13 a.m. (Oak St. Properties): A Campus Safety officer found an individual sleeping inside a shed at the Oak St. properties. The officer informed the individual that they were on private property and needed to leave. The officer also warned the individual that if they returned to the property trespass charges would be filed. The individual gathered their belongings and vacated the premises.


January 25, 2023, 2:12 p.m. (Oak St. Properties): Campus Safety received a report that the deadbolt on one of the doors at the Oak St. properties had been forcefully removed. No individuals were found trespassing in and around the area.


January 26, 2023, 11:50 a.m. (Walton Hall): Campus Safety received a phone call stating that there had been suspicious activity in Walton 26/27 (basement mechanical closet), including broken equipment and a makeshift bed. A Campus Safety officer responded to the scene and noted broken glass bottles and equipment, a pillow, and fiberglass bedding in the area. The officer conducted a patrol of the building and found one exterior window that was unlocked and could be opened from the outside.


January 26, 2023, 12:28 p.m. (Oak St. Properties): An individual called Campus Safety to report individuals prying on the fence that was recently repaired at the Oak St. properties. A Campus Safety officer arrived on scene and found that the fence had been damaged again and would need to be repaired.


Theft

January 20, 2023, 1:00 p.m. (Baxter Hall): A student reported that they discovered their bicycle had been stolen from the Baxter Hall bicycle storage sometime after August 2022. The cable lock that had been used to secure their bicycle appeared to have been cut. A Campus Safety officer met with the student to file a report on the theft.


January 25, 2023, 12:30 p.m. (AGSM): A student reported that their bike seat had been stolen and that the last known location of it was outside of the AGSM building. A Campus Safety officer met with the student to file a report on the theft.


Vandalism

January 22, 2023, 7:19 a.m. (Softball Field): While on patrol, a Campus Safety officer discovered graffiti on the north facing exterior wall of the softball field dugout. Graffiti removal was requested.
