Photo Essay: "Medical Freedom" Protest

By Melissa Baskin

Below are several photos from a rally protesting Kate Brown’s Aug. 24 mask mandate, as well as COVID vaccination requirements.

Protestors gather alongside Court Street in front of the Capitol building. There are several tents set up along the Capitol Park Plaza selling goods behind the protestors.

A man holding sign that reads "Nazi Joe Has Got to Go! Commie Shots!" behind a line of protestors.

Shoes hanging on the fence outside the state capitol building. The sign reads "This shoes saves lives without the JAB!!! How dare you take away my JOB!! Your MANDATE KILLS my FREEDOM RIGHTS!!! My shoes are here to keep this FIGHT!!!"

A letter and pair of shoes hanging on a fence in front of the capitol. The letter reads:

"18 September 2021

Hello! My name is Meghan and I have been an RN for 11 years. I have been a certified operating room nurse since 2014. In 2018, I relocated to Portland from Long Island, NY to join the OR Resource Pool for Legacy Health. This is a pivotal moment in human history and I stand behind my right of medical autonomy. It is with this decision that I leave my scrub hat and shoes as a symbol of choice, a symbol of freedom, a symbol of standing up against tyranny, whichever form it chooses to take.

"Freedom is contagious. That's why despots fear it so much." - Bill Owens

I also leave the shoes of the love of my life, who

stands by my side and supports my decision.

Peace, Love & Freedom!

Meghan"

A protestor holding sign through the sun roof of a car reads "ARREST KATE BROWN for Violation of Human Rights."

Protestors posted a sign quoting from Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Buck v Bell allowed for the sexual sterilization of inmates of institutions to promote the "health of the patient and the welfare of society."

A woman holding sign out the window of a car reads "IF YOUR BOSS SAYS 'HAVE SEX WITH ME OR YOU'RE FIRED.' IS THAT COERCION OR CHOICE?"

Group walking down Court Street holding various signs including "Covid Survivor", "Free Societies Do Not Coerce Injections", "STOP THE MANDATE!", "GOD We Need you NOW" and more.
