Emergency Medical Aide
April 1, 2022, 6:47 p.m. (In a Campus Building): An officer received a call from a student in a campus building reporting another student had passed out and was requesting medical assistance. The officer responded and called WEMS. The officer was met by the student who appeared pale and began vomiting. Upon arrival at the scene, the WEMS asked the officer to call 911. The paramedics arrived and transported to the ER.
April 2, 2022, 10:46 p.m. (In a Campus Residence): An officer was dispatched to a campus residence to check on a student who had been drinking alcohol and was not feeling well. The officer called WEMS on the way to the residence hall. WEMS had already arrived and told the officer to call 911. The student was transported to the ER by paramedics.
April 3, 2022, 8:02 p.m. (In a Campus Residence): An officer was dispatched after a caller reported that a student needed medical assistance after falling in the shower and hitting their head. The dispatcher also contacted WEMS. On arrival at the scene, the officer was informed by the student’s roommate that the student had fallen in the shower, hit their head, and vomited. Due to the nature of the situation, the officer informed the student that 911 needed to be called. WEMS arrived on site and began assessing the student’s condition. EMS arrived to give medical aid and the student was transported to the ER.
Criminal Mischief
April 3, 2022, 6:36 a.m. (Grounds Building): On patrol, an officer found the west door handle of the Grounds Building had been removed, leaving the lock cylinder exposed. The officer found a metal rod laying in front of the door. The door was secure despite the door knob being removed.
April 5, 2022, 3:22 p.m. (Kaneko Parking Lot): Campus Safety received a report of a hit and run that occurred in the Kaneko parking lot over Spring Break. The reporting party had heard a “clunking sound” for approximately a week before noticing the damage to their vehicle.
Suspicious Activity/Persons
April 1, 2022, 12:57 p.m. (Sparks Parking Lot): A student called Campus Safety reporting seeing an individual with a gun as they were making their way onto campus. The individual in question was wearing a jester hat and a tank top and was pushing a stroller. The gun was reported to be inside the stroller. Officers responded and encountered the individual on 12th St. near Westwood, and were met by two Salem Police units who were also making contact with the individual. Salem Police determined that the gun was an antique rifle and is unable to be used. Campus Safety called the reporting student to thank them and inform them of the outcome of the situation.
April 1, 2022, 1:36 a.m. (Hatfield Fountain): An officer responded to a report of a suspicious individual with a shopping cart walking by the fountain heading toward the University Apartments.
April 1, 2022, 12:35 p.m. (Willamette Campus): A caller reported that they saw a sign stating “April Fools is Banned” with Campus Safety’s phone number listed on it. Officers were dispatched to check campus for posters while on patrol and to be aware of April Fool’s related activity.
April 1, 2022, 4:15 p.m. (Brown Field): An officer received several calls reporting juveniles on bikes riding around campus. The officer encountered them attempting various stunts between the Bistro and Jackson Plaza. The officer approached and the individuals immediately began to leave the property heading west toward Winter Street.
April 2, 2022, 11:00 a.m. (University Center): Campus Safety received a call reporting an individual looking through trash bins and trying to open doors. When an officer responded, they found the subject behind Smith at a trash bin with debris scattered around the area. The officer informed the individual that they were on private property and that they would appreciate it if the area was cleaned up. The individual was compliant in picking up the garbage, and exited the property toward Winter Street.
April 3, 2022, 6:53 a.m. (Jackson Plaza): An officer encountered an individual with a box of shoes sitting at a table in Jackson Plaza. The officer asked the individual if they were a staff member or a student, to which they responded that they were a resident of Salem. The officer informed the individual that they were on private property and needed to leave. The individual proceeded to argue with and take video of the officer, until they left the property heading west toward Winter Street.
April 3, 2022, 8:01 a.m. (Lee House): An officer saw someone laying down in front of the North doors of Lee House next to the dumpsters with three blankets and a trash bag. The individual saw the officer and left the property heading north on Winter Street.
April 3, 2022, 3:45 p.m. (Grounds Building): An employee called to report an individual in the dumpster by the grounds building. An officer responded but the individual had already left the property.
April 3, 2022, 4:05 p.m. (Atkinson GSM): An officer noticed an individual by the Mudd Building. The individual left the property without incident.
April 4, 2022, 12:21 a.m. (Atkinson GSM): Employees reported a suspicious individual standing by in front of the rear entrance door to the Mudd Building. Officers responded but did not find an individual matching the given description. Officers provided escorts for employees back to their cars.
April 4, 2022, 12:28 a.m. (Lee House): An officer noticed an individual pulling hospital blankets out of their bag. When the officer approached, the individual asked if they could sleep there. The individual was informed that they were on private property and that they needed to leave. The officer escorted the individual off campus without further incident.
April 4, 2022, 12:35 a.m. (Winter Street): An officer encountered two individuals smoking under a tree on campus off Winter Street by Olin. When the individuals observed the officer, they began walking toward the YWCA.
April 4, 2022 3:09 p.m. (University Center): An officer noticed individuals looking at a bike that was locked near the UC. The individuals left campus after the officer made contact.
April 5, 2022, 10:53 a.m. (TIUA Parking Lot): Campus Safety received a call stating that an individual across the street from the Kaneko parking lot was screaming/cursing. An officer made contact with the individual, who moved away from the property.
April 5, 2022, 1:17 p.m. (Waller Hall): An employee called to report a “Starbuck” situation. Three Campus Safety officers immediately responded, but the individual had already left the building. An officer spoke with the reporting employee, who stated that the individual was becoming belligerent in their office and making everyone in the building uncomfortable. The officer said that if the individual shows up again they will be removed from campus and the police would be called. Campus Safety received another call that an individual with the same description was in the Law School near Rick’s Cafe, and appeared to be intoxicated. The individual was escorted off campus by an officer. Campus Safety received another call later the same day about the same individual, who reportedly was asking students if they needed card access to gain entry to campus buildings. The subject was reportedly becoming aggressive. Officers were once again dispatched and informed the individual that they were trespassing and needed to leave the property. The individual complied.
April 6, 2022, 12:22 p.m. (Sparks Field): An employee called to report an individual sleeping with a blanket by the East side of the Soccer Field. Officers made contact and the individual left the property.
April 6, 2022, 7:00 p.m. (TIUA Parking Lot): A student called concerned that someone might have been attempting to break into their vehicle, as something was found in the bed of their vehicle. Officers offered to make more frequent patrols around that area.
April 7, 2022, 7:47 a.m. (Hatfield Library): An employee called to report a screw had been wedged into the front door of the library, allowing entry when staff arrived at the building that morning. Officers were dispatched to walk through the building to check for suspicious activity/individuals. Nothing unusual was found in the building or surrounding areas. The screw was removed from the door.
April 7, 2022, 3:12 p.m. (University Services Building): An individual towing a red wagon passed in front of the building. An officer went to check on the individual and reported they were moving off the property.
