Campus Safety Report
September 28 - October 4 2020

Criminal Mischief
September 28, 9:20 p.m. (Matthews Parking Lot): Campus Safety received a call reporting gasoline pouring out of a vehicle. An officer responded and examined the damage and was later met by the owner and explained the damage. The officer and maintenance were able to clean up all the spilled gasoline.
October 2, 3:10 p.m. (University Apartments Parking Lot): A student stopped by the Campus Safety office to report that their vehicle had items stolen from the vehicle and that the vehicle had been vandalized multiple times during the week. A report was filed.
Emergency Medical Aid
September 29, 10:50 a.m. (In a Campus Residence): Campus Safety was contacted by Bishop Wellness to evaluate a student who had taken medication and was not feeling well. An officer and EMS responded and evaluated the student who was left in their own care. The on-call area coordinator was also notified.
September 30, 6:10 a.m. (In a campus residence): Campus Safety received a call from a student reporting they were dizzy and experiencing pain. The student was transported to the Salem ER. The on-call area coordinator was also notified.
October 3, 12:30 a.m. (In a Campus Residence): Campus Safety received a call from an RA reporting an individual in the restroom not responding to knocking on the door after several attempts to contact the individual inside. An officer responded and unlocked the door and encountered a student sleeping. The individual was safely escorted back to their room.
Suspicious Activity/Persons
September 28, 6:55 a.m. (Matthews Parking Lot): While on patrol, an officer encountered an individual without a mask on passing through campus. The officer attempted to make contact with the individual, but the individual then started walking faster. The officer advised the individual that the campus is closed to visitors and that masks are required on campus. The officer followed the individual until they were off campus.
September 28, 10:26 a.m. (Matthews Parking Lot): Campus Safety was contacted after a student encountered an individual going through the dumpsters. An officer responded and met with the individual and advised them that the campus is closed to visitors. The individual then left campus.
September 28, 5:29 p.m. (Micah Building): Campus Safety received a call reporting individuals sitting on the stairs possibly "doing drugs." An officer responded and searched the surrounding areas, but was unable to locate anyone in the area.
September 29, 8:49 p.m. (University Services): While on patrol, an officer encountered an individual pushing a cart and various items on campus. The individual was asked to leave and was escorted off campus.
September 30, 7:51 a.m. (University Services): Campus Safety received a call reporting an individual passing through campus carrying a gas canister. An officer responded and checked with the individual who then left campus.
September 30, 12:17 p.m. (Jackson Plaza): Campus Safety received a call reporting an individual in the area not wearing a mask. The individual did not comply when informed by students that masks are required on campus and that the campus is closed to visitors. An officer responded and searched the area, but they were unable to locate the individual.
September 30, 6:25 p.m. (Lee House): Campus Safety received a call reporting two teenage individuals on bikes riding around on campus. An officer responded and found the individuals and informed them that they would have to leave campus.
September 30, 7:54 p.m. (Matthews Hall): Campus Safety received a call reporting an individual going through the dumpsters in the area. An officer responded and searched the area and ultimately found the individual. The individual was then asked to leave campus.
October 1, 5:00 p.m. (University Apartments Parking Lot): While on patrol, an officer encountered an individual lying in the grass and who appeared to be passed out. The officer made contact with the individual who they believed to be under the influence of alcohol. The individual was asked to leave campus and complied.
October 2, 12:19 p.m. (Waller Hall): Campus Safety received a call reporting an individual sitting in the chairs near the Star Trees that did not appear to be a Willamette community member. An officer responded and searched the area, but was unable to locate the individual.
October 2, 1:58 p.m. (Hatfield Fountain): Campus Safety received a call reporting an individual without a mask on kicking signs and drinking from a bottle. An officer responded and searched the area. The officer found the individual and made sure they left campus.
October 2, 3:02 p.m. (WISH House): While on patrol, Willamette Watch encountered individuals in front of the building without masks on. An officer responded and searched the area, but the individuals were no longer there.
October 2, 3:08 p.m. (Skybridge): Campus Safety received a call reporting individuals underneath the bridge without masks on and smoking. An officer responded and met with the individuals and informed them of the no smoking and mask policy.
Theft
September 29, 7:55 a.m. (University Apartments Parking Lot): Campus Safety was contacted after a student discovered that their catalytic converter was stolen from underneath their vehicle. A report was filed and the student was also encouraged to file a report with the Salem Police Department.
October 1, 8:25 a.m. (Brown Field): Campus Safety was contacted by Maintenance after they noticed an electrical box had been stolen from the tent on the field. A report was filed.
October 5, 8:37 a.m. (University Center): Campus Safety was contacted after a student noticed that a bamboo mat had been removed from the roof of a Sukkah which was set up for the festival of Sukkot. A report was filed.
October 3, 7:45 p.m. (Matthews Parking Lot): Campus Safety was contacted after a student noticed that their catalytic converters were stolen from underneath their Prius. A report was filed and the student was also encouraged to file a report with the Salem Police Department.
Welfare Check
October 2, 4:20 p.m. (In a Campus Residence): Campus Safety received a call requesting a welfare check by a parent who had not heard from their student for the past few days. An officer responded to check on the student and was met by their roommate who stated they also had not seen their roommate for some time. Campus Safety and University officials were then notified by Salem Police of the death of the student. No further details regarding the death have been made available at this time and all questions should be directed to the Salem Police department.
