Salem fire department responds to small Goudy fire during lunch period

Fire quickly contained, dinner service resumed as normal

Around 20 minutes after Goudy opened for lunch on Tuesday, a small kitchen fire caused patrons and staff to evacuate from the building. The Salem fire department was quickly on scene, bringing two fire trucks to Winter Street to assess the building. Officials determined that the fire was quickly put out by kitchen safety equipment. Goudy was open for its regular dinner hours Tuesday evening.

Salem Fire Department’s Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Johnson, one of the responders to the incident, said it was “just a standard cooking fire that happened, a grease fire. The Ansul hood system activated and put out the fire, just as it should've.” Johnson added that the building would likely reopen the same day, and at the time of interview, which was around noon, crews were working to clear out the smoke from the building.

In a written statement, the Executive Director of Campus Safety & Emergency Management AJ Christensen, shared “[Campus Safety] responded to a fire alarm in Goudy and assisted with evacuation of the building.” 

Christensen also said, “We are thankful for the quick response of Salem Fire and their assistance.”
