An email was sent out to the Willamette community on Oct. 8 from the University Chaplain Ineda Pearl Adesanya, alerting the community to the deaths of the parents of Environmental Science Professor and CAS Faculty Chair Dr. Karen Arabas. Anne Bowden and Eugene Borza, both Willamette community members themselves, died during this year. Bowden died of cancer on Jan 21 and Borza died Sep 5.

Bowden was a member of the Willamette Institute for Continued Learning and was an English professor and teacher. The email added, “she loved cooking, bird-watching, gardening, reading, and volunteering.”

Borza was a professor emeritus of ancient history at Pennsylvania State University who lectured several times at Willamette and according to the email, “very much enjoyed his Willamette colleagues from Classics, Art History, and Archaeology.”

The email closed with a message regarding the loss: “The deaths of both parents in such a short time are a tremendous loss and sadness. We offer Dr. Karen Arabas our deepest condolences, and may we hold her in our hearts as a community during this time of grief. May Anne Bowden and Eugene Borza’s memories be a blessing for all who knew and loved them.”
